Originally built as a hotel in 1908 the Hyde Park Picture House is a Leeds landmark. The building was converted in to a cinema in 1914 and is now one of the only surviving picture houses in the UK. With original features such as old gas lighting and a decorative Edwardian balcony visitors come not only to watch films but to take in the atmosphere and history of the old-style Picture Palace.

Every night the Hyde Park Picture House shows a selection of art house and foreign movies as well as classic old films from the birth of cinema onwards. More recently the cinema has started to show a handful of mainstream films but these are more often the critically acclaimed award winners rather than the latest Vin Diesel action adventure or Jennifer Aniston rom-com. Dedicated followers of film flock here to catch the latest Palm D’or winner or Arabian export while young and old alike experience their favourite old films as they should be seen.

Right in the heart of Leeds’ student area, the Picture House has survived 90 years of expansion and development and while Leeds has become the picture of modern urbanity it has remained unchanged as a shrine to early 20th century West Yorkshire. This, of course, means that the Picture House is not the most comfortable of places to spend two hours but every pin and every needle in your rear is worth it to experience cinema as it should be. And, lets not forget, while we might give up our supersized cokes and comfortable seats to come here we’re also missing out on whispering teenagers, overpriced popcorn and kids kicking the back of the seat.

It may not be to everybody’s taste - we know there are some days when you just can’t face subtitles or worthy messages and would rather settle down to some CGI or a far fetched love story - but there’s no denying that the Hyde Park Picture House is a part of Leeds’ history that can’t be missed and a film buff’s dream venue.

"This cinema has started a fortnightly BYOB - Bring your own BABY! screenings. An absolute godsend for new mums and dads who otherwise might not get to go to the cinema with their wee ones. The films shown are interesting and diverse new releases.

The staff are excellent and could not be more friendly or accommodating.

Highly recommended for keeping those post-natal brain cells stimulated, and the babies seem to enjoy it too."

"Had a great time watching the Bourne Ultimatum on a much bigger screen than you usually get these days. Plus they let us go upstairs just to have a look around. Older folk (like me - I was visiting my son who's at university in Leeds) will thoroughly enjoy a clean, large cinema - there's even a clock on the wall. It takes you back!"

"I recently visited this "Picture House" to watch a film on,"Scott Walker." I live in Middlesbrough but Leeds was the nearest place to me that was showing this very, special, film.

It was worth the car ride, not only to see one of my favourite artists on the big-screen but also to see the wonder of this beautiful, old, building. I'm a bit of a romantic at heart. While waiting for the film to start, I imagined the ladies and gents from way back, sitting in their fine clothing, looking forward to the next few hours of entertainment much the same as I was. Yes, it's definitely worth a visit."

"It's great to see the HP is still up and running - many a Friday/Saturday night did I stumble into the HP for the late night showing in the late 70s early 80s. Usually after a few pints of creamy Tetleys at about 33p a pint - yes I will repeat that 33p a pint.

I hope Leeds uni and polyversity students are still enjoying the same - the HP that is - I know the 33p pint is long gone."

"I do not know when this review was written but you will not get anymore pins and needles than you would at a multiplex as the Hyde Park has new seating, also Popcorn Cola and Dolby Digital Sound so you do not have to miss out on anything!!"
